Islamic Center of Baton Rouge (Naasif Hassan)
Islamic Center of Baton Rouge (Service Hours:3)
On November 29th, I had the privalege of collaborating with a few members of the masjid community to organize a basketball event at the local mosque of Baton Rouge. As a board member of the ICBR, our objectives were to rent the gym using the ICBR funds, send out invitations, setting up the gym by placing the pads and goals, and managing the basketball runs. We were able to welcome over 30 attendants all under the support of the Islamic Center of Baton Rouge by using the social media page. Hosting these events is rewarding because as someone who does not live in my hometown anymore, it feels great knowing that the community is bonding and engaging with each other. As an MS student at Tulane Pharmacology, being involved in the culture of Tulane, it helped understand how important it is to serve for your community no matter what oppurtunities you are given. The muslim community in Baton Rouge is majorily underserved and underepresented and Tulane emphasizes on community engagement which alligns with my personal mission of contributing and giving back to the community. Being a board member of the ICBR basketball league, it is an honor and privalege of hosting events. Creating and leading an event and being able to see what you were able to set up is a rewarding feeling. In the upcoming semester, I will be more involved with the masjid in New Orleans and the hospitals around the Kenner area. I have also signed up with the local food bank in Baton Rouge and will be completing a few shifts. Instagram Page for ICBR: https://www.instagram.com/icbrbasketball/
