Islamic Cultural Event (3 hours) As a masters student in pharmacology at Tulane School of Medicine it is always important to spend your free time giving back to the community. This month I attended an event that was held by the Islamic board of masjid Al-Rahman that was hosted by LSU MSA. Due to graduating from LSU MSA and being part of the board of the club it was great going back and volunteer to help with simple tasks as cleaning up and serving food to the members. The event was held in the Cultural Convention center on LSU campus and it was to collaborate different cultures from different countries across the Middle East and South Asian countries. Groups made presentations about the history and the cultural aspect of their country and presented to the club which also had an outcome of over 30 people. This gathering was nostalgic because it reminded of my days in the undergraduate program and seeing the people that were once young to now becoming juniors and seniors in the club. It ...

January Blog

January Blog Naasif Hassan The new semester in Pharmacology at Tulane has been incredible so far, with many exciting changes in how we learn. One of the biggest transitions has been moving from traditional module-based learning to a more interactive and hands-on approach. Courses like Neuropharmacology, Endocrine Pharmacology, and Adv ances in Pharmacology now require us to complete presentation work, which encourages more interaction with classmates. This shift not only deepens our understanding of the material but also allows us to practice presenting in front of our peers and instructors. It’s a great opportunity to build public speaking and presentation skills—essential tools for our future careers in pharmacology.  In addition to my academic commitments, this semester will also be filled with volunteering and shadowing outside of class. I’ve been reaching out to hospitals in both Baton Rouge and New Orleans, including Baton Rouge General Hospital, to arrange volunteer opportun...

Islamic Center of Baton Rouge (Service Hours:3) On November 29th, I had the privalege of collaborating with a few members of the masjid community to organize a basketball event at the local mosque of Baton Rouge. As a board member of the ICBR, our objectives were to rent the gym using the ICBR funds, send out invitations, setting up the gym by placing the pads and goals, and managing the basketball runs. We were able to welcome over 30 attendants all under the support of the Islamic Center of Baton Rouge by using the social media page. Hosting these events is rewarding because as someone who does not live in my hometown anymore, it feels great knowing that the community is bonding and engaging with each other. As an MS student at Tulane Pharmacology, being involved in the culture of Tulane, it helped understand how important it is to serve for your community no matter what oppurtunities you are given. The muslim community in Baton Rouge is majorily underserved and underepresented and T...

Islamic Center of Baton Rouge (Naasif Hassan) ICBR Youth Basketball  Service Hours: 3 Hours       This month I went to an event at the Community Center for muslims to train the youth in basketball to run drills on October 18th. Me and my friend Zain Aslam who is an undergraduate student at Tulane in the pre-medical route needed community service, and we decided to attend the event. This event was hosted by the ICBR (Islamic Center of Baton Rouge) league and required multiple people with experience playing competitive basketball to train young adults. The event is meant to bring the youth and the community together to enjoy something we all share passion with. Attending Tulane's Pharmacology program has taught me to be a leader in my free time in tasks outside the classroom and be a role model for the community. This opportunity allowed me to meet young and inspired children in Baton Rouge who all have a hunger to achieve in getting a higher education. In Baton R...

Naasif Hassan  Blog Post ICBR Basketball (September 30th) Edit of a video our cameraman, Malik Abraham of the final game of the season   Islamic Center Baton Rouge Basketball League Commissioner Service Hours: 6  Islamic Center Basketball is a league that me, Naasif Hassan, Abdullah Shahid, Yousef Mosleh, and Tabarak Abdul-Aziz have created for the muslim community in Baton Rouge. The event started in July and has ended early this month. Before we created this league, we used to play pick up basketball together at random courts with the same community. There were sometimes where we would have 30 people appear to our pickup basketball runs and were constantly getting kicked out of different courts. At the start of the summer, June, the indoor basketball gym was finished being built along with the paint. It took an immense amount of preparation to build this league together. My role was to organize the different rules we needed to allow the basketball games to run smoothly...
